Suicide Porn

On Radio 4's Start the Week (no less) I heard my old tutor Michael Burleigh, who has written a cultural history of terrorism. There was one amazing bit - he compared the structure of a jihadi suicide bomber's video to that of a porn movie. And he's right. It starts in somebody's living room, looking rather ordinary. There are some basic statements, and then a build-up of images moving towards the explosive "money shot". In some suicide bomber videos, the explosion is looped, so you see it several times. All horribly in keeping with what we're finding in this show.
