The End

Three fellows went to see a show
Their feelings of which were of distaste and slow
When the show had ended their hearts wept
For their emotions had been swept

They danced in the particles of light
And cringed with the torturer in sight
Laughed at the hippies with their guitar
And were confused with the director who spoke too far

Dazzled by the fashion
and haunted by the plane crash
Angry at the ignorance of the news reporters
and at the Car salesman who was pure sleaze and trash

The three fellows leaving the emotional rollercoaster ride
Walked away to gather their thoughts at the side
Like the director said 'she'd cut' with a knife
Their eyes had been opened to the world, after seeing Attempts on her Life!

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE!

JUST came across this- incredible. It's from a norwegian newspaper where a psychiatrist has written a book about how all people under certain circumstances can act out violent, even sadistic actions. The photos are from abu ghraib- some of them we know, others are...well, shocking. Particularly the one standing like Jesus on the cross with excrement smeared all over his body. "I shit on you graves and on the graves of your mothers and fathers..."

Porno

This article is VERY much the world of our play - hmmm, including discussing one great new concept (one which I am resolved to sell) it's "Ethical Porn". Yes indeed, with Fair Trade chocolate and Ethical Porn - I can feel like a good person.

Anne?

Are you there Anne?
Are you in there somewhere?
Am I still looking for you?
Or have I already passed you by?

My eyes long to see your face
I need to know who you are Anne

I think someway you will complete me
...and that I will find some truth to my life

I don't know who I am
Am I an image in someones head too?
Am I a form of a mass collective conscious?

Please help me find me
Please Anne?

Suicide Porn

On Radio 4's Start the Week (no less) I heard my old tutor Michael Burleigh, who has written a cultural history of terrorism. There was one amazing bit - he compared the structure of a jihadi suicide bomber's video to that of a porn movie. And he's right. It starts in somebody's living room, looking rather ordinary. There are some basic statements, and then a build-up of images moving towards the explosive "money shot". In some suicide bomber videos, the explosion is looped, so you see it several times. All horribly in keeping with what we're finding in this show.

Kamikaze

Did anyone else catch this documentary about the Japanese sucide missions of WWII?
I just can't get my head around it! I watched it to try and get an "insight" into the mind of the "sucide bombers" in the world of our play - but listening to these stories from elderly Japanese men and women I am more overwhelmed, berwildered and in complete disbelief about this world we live in than I ever have been before. And when a sister says "that even after 60 years" she still cries - well, one can't help weeping too. Tess

Commercialism and do- gooding. And scary planes.

Check out this link from Apple's home page. There are a lot of these things knocking about and I find it kinda funny.......that one of the world's largest brands all about the self and consumerism (I- mac, I-pod, I- phone, I , I, me, me...;) are selling one of their products to help Aids victims i Africa. If I buy this Ipod, with a fancy new colour incidentally, I'm a good person!!!

http://www.apple.com/uk/ipod/red/

Also I watched some scary footage of 9/11, it occured to me I hadn't seen it since 01...not deliberatly anyway...I had forgotten the horror of seeing that second plane come flying low and then crashing into the tower, and minutes later they crumpled to dust and ashes. There are some pretty wild conspiracy theories out there about what happened- up to and including seeing the face of Satan in the smoke billowing up from the smashed towers...

This thing we think about!

This thing we talk about.
This thing we have a name for.
This thing we show people we care for.

How do we get it out?
How do we make it known?

Should it be known?

What is it we talk about that’s happening
That’s happening right now, in the midst
In the midst of cooking, cleaning and feeding?

It’s an expression of some kind
It’s an expression, unnatural
At the same, completely natural

Is it emotion or an act of oppression
Violence or a flight for confession

This thing we talk about
This thing we shout about
This thing we laugh about
This thing we cry about

Three men bound together in an empty room
It could be an experiment or a sadistic act
What it was, was three best friends reunion pact

How do we get it out?
How do we make it known?

Should it be known?

What is it we talk about that’s happening
That’s happening right now, in the midst
In the midst of raping, killing and slaughtering?

Separated by the metallic bars of doom
Separated by the metallic cars
What it is, is concrete scars

Inflicted by 37 metallic bars
This thing we fear
The difference we fear
Is LOVE

Love Andre

Fashion Show Anyone?

scene one - check!
all the rest - Hmmmmmm

Costume Team

Half way

Half way through the studio calls.
We just about know what each scene might be. Kind of.
We know who's in some of them.
Occassionally even what they say.
We have no idea what it all adds up to.
Maybe we never will.

Hmmm.....well all i can say it that
You all need to see what your feeling is real

it's far more exacting than ACTING

A Funeral & Memorial: Taped messages from both sides

An extract from The Guardian today...

Hizbullah's leader today vowed to wage "open war" against Israeli targets around the world after accusing Israel of assassinating the organisation's militant commander, Imad Mughniyeh.
"You have crossed the borders," Nasrallah said in a fiery eulogy at Mughniyeh's funeral in south Beirut. "With this murder, its timing, location and method - Zionists, if you want this kind of open war, let the whole world listen: let this war be open."... said Nasrallah, speaking in a videotaped message broadcast over a giant screen at the ceremony.
...Meanwhile, thousands of anti-Hizbullah supporters poured into Beirut's Martyrs' Square for the third anniversary of the assassination of the former prime minister, Rafik Hariri.
A flame was lit and a taped message broadcast from Hariri's widow, Nazek, who lives in Paris, urging against "falling into hatred" and calling for "unity to save the country".

Torture Update

Hello everyone!

Here's a link to some pics from Abu Ghraib, the Iraqui prison from where the famous pics originate: http://www.antiwar.com/news/?articleid=8560
This should give us an idea of how the audience should feel after the bang has happened.

Hi everyone...
below is the title of an article printed in The Guardian today -

Desturbing research

Hi all!

While researching for the play I came over this web site:

www.LiveLeak.com

I'm not posting any videos from the site since they are quite desturbing!
I searched "terrorist videos", I actually had to register to be able to watch, and I see why.

"Enjoy"

Money, Money, Money!

From the budget meeting we just had on Friday, I'd like to thank everyone whose managed to pull strings to get this manic production under way. Each department is going to have to work their hardest to keep the show within the budget, but I know we've got a good team, and I know together we can acheive our goals.

I'm hoping we're able to get alot of what we want in the show. As far as I know, nothing like this (at least on this scale) has been done in the Rose Theatre, or any of the other spaces at college. For those of you who aren't on the show and may be wondering 'what is he talking about?'..................well...you're going to have to come see it and find out for yourself.

Why this blog?

Michael Walling writes:

We're about to start rehearsing Attempts on Her Life on Monday - and we've set up this crazy blog which I hope everybody involved will be contributing to from time to time along the way. It's because this is so much a piece about viewpoint - about lots of different ways of looking at something or someone - that it seemed right we should try to reflect that in all we do. Even the publicity and the discussions. If it goes to plan, there will be as many different voices in as many different moods on this blog as there are in the play. And that's a lot.

It's also a play about now. About what it feels like to be alive in our post-modern, post-everything else, media-saturated, techno-filtered age. So a blog seemed like the best place to talk about it. Let's talk.
